"Fire Departments typically host open houses around Fire Prevention Week in October as a way to raise awareness and promote their organization. In one picture you see a bunch around a car. Here were are simulating a vehicle extrication using various power tools. In another you see a large (L-R) crowd and they are viewing that demonstration. With the one on fire, we set this on fire to demonstrate how quickly a fire can spread, and why you must exit immediately and stay low to the ground. We then set the second room, on the right, on fire. The only difference is there is a home fire sprinkler installed. They can see total destruction of the first room and the second room has the fire sprinkler activate in about 40 seconds extinguishing the fire in an incipient stage saving their belongings.
Fire Inspectors main use will be to promote fire sprinklers. We will have a trailer that can be towed to various events where we will light a fire inside it to show how quickly a fire sprinkler system can work. We have been using these types of trailer for many years. I am next to one discussing the unfolding events during a demonstration.
I have seen that without the use of a good portable PA system, with a wireless microphone, many good teaching points will be lost to the group."
